Liz Magallanes is an actor, writer, movement artist, non-profit professional, and a proud DISD graduate who has worked as an advocate in the Dallas community to bring about justice through empowerment and civic engagement in Latino, immigrant, and allied communities. She is the scholarship recipient of the University of Dallas’ Dean’s Scholarship, Dallas Foundation Scholarship, Greater Dallas Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Stars on the Rise Scholarship, and DISD Superintendent’s Scholarship. Her advocacy work has taken various forms; as an activist and volunteer, with the North Texas Dream Team and Catholic Charities, in the legal field working with various immigration attorneys to inform communities about their rights, and by means of grassroots organizing. She has worked intersectionally with local organizations like Texas Organizing Project, Dallas Area Interfaith, The Concilio, an affiliate of UNIDOSUS, the largest Latino civil rights organization in the U.S., and Faith in Texas, where she served on the Board of Directors. Nationally, she has worked with United We Dream and Mi Familia Vota, to connect the issues impacting Latino, immigrant, and allied communities to effect social change. As an artist, she strives to incorporate diverse creative voices in the Arts. She was recently seen as Katherine in Shakespeare Dallas’ Taming of the Shrew. She has also appeared in Cara Mia Theatre’s productions of Tina’s Journey, performing with traditional Mexican masks, in collaboration with Laboratorio de la Mascara (Mexico City); co-writing and devising DIOSA, in collaboration with Manifesto Poetico (Madrid); the real life story of Crystal City 1969, portraying Civil Rights Activist Luz Bazán Gutiérrez, co-founder of La Raza Unida Party, the first Latino political party in the U.S. She’s grateful to get to build community by marrying her art and advocacy, which can be seen in The Young Vote documentary and PBS’ The Expressway with Dulé Hill.
