Acting with Mexican Folk Masks

2-hour workshop & Residency

Students will learn how to perform with masks from around the world. They will also work with theater games and basic elements for character construction. Students will create a character based on the mask they will be working with as well as on research on cultural and theatrical masks from around the world. Scenes or a demonstration of developed characters will be presented at the end of the session.

For grades 4 – 12.

Mexican Arts & Crafts for Children

2-hour workshop & Residency

Young people will create artwork inspired by the artistic traditions of Mexico. Students will create pieces inspired by pre-Hispanic art, Mexico’s colonial period, and popular art that has exsisted for centuries in small towns throughout Mexico. Additional 2-hour workshops may be scheduled to build a cumulative curriculum of up to 10 hours.

For grades 1-12.

Mask Making for the Theater

2-hour workshop & Residency

Students create masks based on research on cultural and theatrical masks from around the world. In a highly structured curriculum, students design their own personal masks and learn how to use them for performances.

This popular residency is available for day classes and after-school programs.

For grades 1-6.

Acting Up Workshop

In this fun acting workshop students will develop confidence, creativity and communication skills. Students develop these skills through interactive theatre games and warm-ups. They also will utilize improvisation and scene work to develop their creativity and acting skills. Students will work collaboratively with short scripted scenes and will learn how to develop a character. Acting Up! meets Fine Arts TEKS.

For grades 2-12.

A six-class residency of the same style is available. This residency does include a final performance.

Write On! Residency

Our Most Popular Residency

Students collaborate to develop a play based on their own ideas, a piece of literature, works of art, or Social Studies material. Write On! meets Language Arts and Fine Arts requirements. Children also develop confidence, creativity and communication skills by working together, writing, and developing original performances.

This residency is available for day classes and after-school programs.

For grades 4-12.

Drum Orchestra

Building Confidence Through Rhythm Residency

Students will learn the basics of playing drums and percussion in an orchestra of found objects such as plastic buckets, Tupperware shakers, and metal trash cans. Over the course of four classes, students will learn the fundamentals of rhythm, playing in time with other players, and creating polyrhythms. This residency will culminate in a final performance for students’ parents and their peers.

For grades 1 – 12.

Big Puppets Residency

Big puppets have been used in many cultures and for many different theater companies around the world. Oversized puppets, or Mojigangas, have been used in Mexican towns during religious and cultural festivities. Mojigangas usually represent humans or animals from the town and are beautiful and playful. In this workshop, students will be shown the various types of puppets there are before creating their own designs. They also will learn how to use the puppets in a show. A presentation will be given for other students, teachers and family members on the eighth day.
